1. Statement of Intent

PFWCA UK is committed to ensuring, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety, and welfare of all volunteers, staff, and members of the public involved in our activities.

We aim to provide a safe environment for community health screening, education, and outreach programmes in the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

2. Legal Framework

This policy is guided by:

  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999

PFWCA UK will comply with all relevant UK health and safety legislation.

3. Responsibilities

🟢 Organisation Responsibilities

PFWCA UK will:

  • Identify and assess risks in all activities

  • Provide appropriate training and guidance

  • Ensure safe equipment is used

  • Maintain safe working environments

  • Review safety procedures regularly

🟢 Volunteer Responsibilities

All volunteers must:

  • Take reasonable care of their own safety and others

  • Follow all safety instructions and guidance

  • Report hazards, incidents, or concerns immediately

  • Use equipment properly and only if trained

4. Risk Assessment

PFWCA UK will carry out risk assessments before all activities, including:

  • Community health events

  • Outreach programmes

  • Volunteer training sessions

Control measures will be implemented to reduce risks.

5. Safe Use of Equipment

For health screening activities:

  • Only approved and maintained equipment will be used

  • Volunteers will be trained before using equipment

  • Equipment will be cleaned and stored safely

Examples:

  • Blood pressure monitors

  • Blood glucose testing devices

6. Infection Prevention & Hygiene

PFWCA UK will:

  • Promote hand hygiene

  • Use disposable gloves where required

  • Clean equipment between uses

  • Follow basic infection prevention procedures

7. First Aid & Emergencies

  • A basic first aid kit will be available at events

  • In case of emergency, volunteers must contact emergency services (999)

  • Incidents must be recorded and reported

8. Incident Reporting

All accidents, near misses, or incidents must be reported using an incident report form.

This helps improve safety and prevent future issues.

9. Safeguarding

PFWCA UK recognises its responsibility to protect children and vulnerable adults.

Volunteers must:

  • Act respectfully at all times

  • Report any safeguarding concerns immediately

10. Public Safety

When engaging with the public:

  • Clear communication must be maintained

  • Participants must give consent for health checks

  • Privacy and dignity must be respected

11. Training

PFWCA UK will provide:

  • Basic health and safety guidance

  • Role-specific training

  • Safeguarding awareness

12. Monitoring & Review

This policy will be reviewed annually or when necessary to ensure it remains effective and compliant.
